The “Hibernate” function on Windows XP

The hibernate function on Windows XP is basically the same as stand by, but with one difference. The files and programs you have open will temporarily be saved onto a specific location on the hard drive, instead of RAM.

This means that the computer can be switched off while hibernating and it will consume no power. When you turn your Windows XP on again, everything will open instantly, just like after a standby. No startup screens and waste of time.

But there is one problem with hibernate – you can only do it once. For some unexplained reason, Windows can’t hibernate severeral times in a row. The temporary hibernate file on your hard drive can’t be overwritten and you need to do a normal shutdown before you can hibernate again. I hope this problem will be fixed in future versions of Windows. (Not sure if it already is on Vista…)

How to hibernate

Another mystery is why the hibernate button isn’t shown on the shutdown menu by default. After all, hibernating is a lot better than standing by -no power consumption, longer than standby, computer can be turned off and makes no noise…

Anyway, to hibernate, go to the shutdown menu as usual: Start -> Turn Off Computer and hold down the shift key to relpace “stand by” with “hibernate”, It’s as easy as that.

Control Inactive System Tray Icons

You don't have to hide or show all the icons in your system tray—you can control their disappearing acts. Right-click on the taskbar and select Properties. Click on the checkbox next to "Hide inactive icons" (if it's not checked by default), then click on the Customize button. For each item on this list, you can choose "Hide when inactive," "Always hide," or "Always show" options to decide what you'll see and when.

How to create a Password Protected Folder(without software)?

Step-1: Create a new folder (Right-click -> New -> Folder) and give it any name of your choice. For instance I name it as ABC.

Step-2: Now in this folder place all the important files, documents or any folders that you want to password protect.

Step-3: Now Right-click on this folder (ABC) and select the option Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Step-4: Now a new compressed zipped folder gets created next this folder (ABC) with the same name.

Step-5: Double-click on this compressed zipped folder and you should see your original folder (ABC) here.

Step-6: Now goto the File menu and select the option Add a password.

ie: File -> Add a password

Now a small window will pop up and here you can set your desired password. Once the password is set, the folder will ask for the password every time it is opened. Thus you have now created the password protected folder.

On screen Keyboard (Windows XP)

Windows XP comes with a good set of features, many of them might not even be noticed by the users. The On-Screen keyboard is one of them. See the screen-shot below:

I guess some people may find this on-screen keyboard useful. Though I never use it, I just keep that in mind in case some keys on my keyboard go down.

Disable Windows XP login prompt for password

Too tired of logging on every time you turn on your personal computer? The good news is, you can disable the logon prompt and have Windows go straight to your desktop. However, this only works for home computers, which are usually not a member of any domain. In particular, the trick only works for local user accounts. 

Start>Run>type

 "control userpasswords2" and press Enter.

> Select your user account from the list.

> Uncheck the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."

> Click "Apply" and "Ok"

> You'll be prompted for password, enter your password and you're all done!.

Disable Shutdown Option in Windows

Disable Turn Off Option ..and ALT+F4 option

THEN GO TO RIGHT SIDE AND BY RIGHT CLICK OF UR MOUSE CREATE NEW DWORD VALUE WITH NAME NoClose and after creating click on it and give Value Data 1.

And Reboot your pc ..now your Turn Off option is disabled ..to Enable it again ..go to that directory by regedit ..and simply delete that created NoClose and Log Off Your User and Log in again ..your Turn off Again Working.

Lock icons on desktop

You have arranged your desktop to look nicely with your wallpaper. Presently comes someone and mess up the nice arrangement. To lock your desktop icons into place, first arrange it carefully the way you want it to be, then open up the registry editor.

 

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.

 

Right-click in the right pane and select New, DWORD Value name NoSaveSettings and press the Enter key. Right-click on the new NoSaveSettings item and select Modify. Enter 1 in the Value data box. After this, whenever you restart Windows, your settings will return to their current state.

Show/Hide Hidden Files and Folders

Wonder why you don't see a file on your Windows PC? It's probably just a hidden file. Hidden files and folders are stored with a hidden attribute and only displayed when the operating system is configured to show them. There must be a good reason on why a file or folder is set to hidden, mainly to avoid unintentional deletion. So once you have the hidden files display together with all other files, just be extra careful when working on the files and folders.

An alternate method to show/hide hidden files is to make some changes on the Windows registry (see the articles at the bottom of this page); however, it is not recommended to use this method if you're not familiar with the Windows Registry.

1. Open "My Computer" then select "Tools" >> "Folder Options".

Burn a CD on Windows XP without using software

Windows XP comes with a builtin CD-copy feature that not many people are aware of. Although almost everyone has his/her favorite CD-copy software to stick with, it is still good to know about this CDR feature from Windows XP. You will find it very useful when you come to another PC that doesn't have a CD-copy software, and you can't just install your favorite software to it. With this feature, you can write some data or MP3 files to a CD/DVD, or erase a re-writable CD/DVD.

If you're using a Re-Writable CD (CD-RW), make sure the disc is blank. You might need to erase (or "format") it before use. For information how to erase a CD-RW on Windows XP without using any other software, 

Requirements: You need to enable the CD-R feature on Windows XP. 

1. Insert a Formated-ReWritable CD or a Recordable (CD-R) disc into the CD drive.
2. From Desktop, double-click on "My Computer".
3. Navigate to the files/folders you want to copy to CD. Select them and press "Ctrl-c" to copy.
4. Browse back to the CD-ROM, and press "Ctrl-V" to paste. The files/folders will show up as temporary files/folders at this time.
   
   
   
5. On the left panel, select "Write these files to CD".
   
   
   
6. The window "CD Writing Wizard" appears with the default CD name. Change the CD name if you wish, then click "Next".

How To Enable Right Click on websites

Lots of web sites have disabled the right click function of the

It's easy to change, assuming your using IE 6:

Lock Ur Folder Without Software

Do you worry about privacy or do you maintain some personal files on the office system or at Friends pc, then you must lock that folder. I know many software that most people use to lock their Personal files. But this trick is the safest and locks files or folders without use of any software's.  

           Suppose you want to lock the folder movies in d: which has the path D:\movies.

In the same drive create a text file and type

ren movies movies.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Now save this text file as loc.bat

Create another text file and type in it

ren movies.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} movies

Now save this text file as key.bat
     Now you can see 2 batch files loc and key. Press loc and the folder movies will change to control panel and you cannot view its contents. Press key and you will get back your original folder.
try it out!!!!!!!

Note: It is safe as in case if you loose the key file, you can create it again but the folder name must be correct.

Many Computer  take a lot of time to boot (or start ).This is due to many reasons.

Some slight changes can do wonders for your system:

1. Press start->run then type msconfig and press enter.

Go to the startup tab. Here you will see a list of startup items. These are all the programs that automatically start when you boot your PC. It is these that slow down the boot up process.

So uncheck all the unwanted items like ms-office, messengers other utilities that u may not need at startup). Don't uncheck your antivirus

Change Title Bar Colors

How do I Test My Antivirus Working or Not Working?

Solution

To test your installation, copy the following line into its own file, then save the file with the name EICAR.COM. More detailed instructions are found below.

Creating Eicar.com

   1. Click on Start.
   2. Select Run.
   3. In the Open box type: notepad
   4. Maximize the window.
   5. Highlight the following on the following line of text:
      X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
   6. Right click on the highlighted text and choose 'copy'.
   7. Switch back to Notepad.
   8. Right click anywhere inside of Notepad and select 'paste'.
   9. Click the File menu and select 'save as'.
  10. Change the 'Save as Type' to 'all files'.
  11. Name the file eicar.com.

Note: that this file is NOT A VIRUS. Delete the file when you have finished testing your installation to avoid alarming unsuspecting
users

If VirusScan is running and configured correctly, when you try to save the file, VirusScan will detect the virus. If VirusScan is not running, start it and scan the directory that contains EICAR.COM. When your software scans this file, it will report finding the EICAR test file.
